Peptide Purity Testing in the UAE: How to Read Laboratory Reports

A laboratory report can provide useful information about a tested sample, but it does not automatically prove that a product is approved, authentic, clinically safe or suitable for a patient. Understanding that distinction is essential when reviewing peptide purity claims online.

This guide explains the common sections of a certificate of analysis (CoA), what HPLC and mass spectrometry can show, and the warning signs that a report may be incomplete or misleading.

What is a certificate of analysis?

A certificate of analysis is a document reporting test results for a defined sample or batch. A useful CoA should connect the tested sample to the actual product through identifiers such as a batch or lot number, sample ID, test date and laboratory reference.

A CoA is only as reliable as the sampling, chain of custody, test method and laboratory that produced it. A PDF with a high percentage and a logo is not enough on its own.

Seven details every useful report should contain

  1. Product or sample name: the material tested should be identified clearly.
  2. Batch or lot number: it should match the number printed on the package.
  3. Sample or report ID: a unique identifier helps the laboratory verify the report.
  4. Test date: reports should be recent enough to relate to the batch being supplied.
  5. Test method: for example, an HPLC method for chromatographic purity or mass spectrometry for molecular identity.
  6. Results and units: the measured value, specification and pass/fail conclusion should be unambiguous.
  7. Laboratory details: name, address, accreditation scope and a way to verify the report independently.

What does HPLC purity mean?

High-performance liquid chromatography, or HPLC, separates components in a sample. A chromatogram can estimate the relative proportion of the main peak compared with other detected peaks under the chosen method.

An HPLC purity percentage does not necessarily confirm the exact identity of the main peak, the amount of active ingredient in a finished pen or vial, sterility, endotoxin levels, residual solvents or clinical safety. Those questions require different validated tests.

What does mass spectrometry show?

Mass spectrometry measures mass-to-charge patterns and can support molecular identity. It is often more informative when used alongside a validated chromatographic method. However, a matching mass alone does not prove that a finished product was manufactured, filled, stored and transported under appropriate pharmaceutical controls.

Purity is not the same as potency

These terms are often confused:

  • Purity describes how much of the detected material corresponds to the main component under a specific method.
  • Identity asks whether the material is actually the claimed molecule.
  • Assay or potency measures how much of the claimed active component is present.
  • Sterility and endotoxin testing address microbiological risks that a purity chromatogram cannot answer.

A report that gives only “99% purity” leaves several important questions unanswered.

How to verify a report

  • Compare the report’s batch number with the product packaging.
  • Contact the laboratory using contact information from its official website, not only details printed on the PDF.
  • Ask whether the report number is genuine and whether the laboratory received the sample directly.
  • Check whether the laboratory’s accreditation covers the specific test method.
  • Look for the full chromatogram or analytical data, not only a one-line result.
  • Confirm that storage and shipping conditions are documented for temperature-sensitive products.

Common warning signs

  • No batch number or a batch number that does not match the package.
  • No test date, method, units or acceptance criteria.
  • An editable document with no report-verification process.
  • A laboratory name that cannot be confirmed independently.
  • One report reused for multiple batches or different product strengths.
  • Claims that a CoA proves regulatory approval or medical suitability.

Why reference standards matter

Analytical testing often uses qualified reference standards to compare the sample with a known material. Organizations such as the United States Pharmacopeia provide official reference standards for compendial testing. The use of a reference standard should be documented in the method or report where relevant.

Packaging and cold-chain checks still matter

Does 99% purity mean a peptide is safe to inject?
